The new airport of Guelmim in Morocco is integrated into an existing military infrastructure located about three kilometers north of the city. The overriding goals of the architecture were simplicity, efficiency and expandability as basic requirements for the airport's long-term maintenance. Under this premise, a new airport building was constructed in two phases parallel to the runways.

The architecture plays with light and shadow

The terminal building consists of two high halls that house the waiting areas - on one side with a view of the landscape, on the other side with a view of the runways. Protection is provided by wide overhangs and a translucent façade. The façade is covered with perforated metal panels that colour shadows and light and reflect subtle decorative motifs from the region in Morocco. The linear main building, which is located between the customs zone and the duty-free zone, has a terrace that provides the heart of the building with natural light, giving the airport a welcoming atmosphere.

In order to avoid expensive technical equipment, the architecture was designed by the architectural office Groupe3Architectes to allow a maximum amount of natural light and air to enter. The view to the outside and the high transparency also make it easier for users to find their way around the building. A successful example of an airport that is more than just a transport hub.
