Building homes has to be one of the most interesting aspects of an architect’s work. It allows us to study peoples’ needs and customs, desires and daily lives in their home environment and culture, and transform them into architectural design. Every project means a new customer and therefore a new challenge, and the opportunity to express flexibility and versatility.

Ten selected contemporary homes in Portugal reflect just this kind of ingenuity: the use of colours, shapes, relationship to the environment or restoration approach gives each building its own look and feel.

Two of the designs are Casa C/Z by SAMI and Casa do Vigário by AND-RÉ. While Casa C/Z seamlessly blends indoors and outdoors with an expanse of glass, Casa do Vigário builds on existing ruins – an exciting fusion of old and new that tells the story of the location.
