Staff and management donate for burnt-down camp Moria
Lingen, December 2020 – emco Group staff and management have donated 5,000 euros as emergency humanitarian aid for refugees in the burnt-down Moria camp.
The money donated goes to the Christian aid organisation “wortundtat”, which has been supporting the needy in India, Tanzania, Moldova, Greece and Germany for over 40 years. The relief organisation was founded in 1977 by Dr. Heinz-Horst Deichmann, who became known for his social and diaconal commitment on the one hand and as the head of the Deichmann shoe empire on the other. Jakob Adolf, wortundtat project coordinator, praised the commitment on the part of emco and described the donation as “a wonderful example of helpfulness, humanity and solidarity”.
The donation is made up of a sum donated by the employees, a top-up by the management and a private donation from Christina Vornberger, the eldest daughter of the company boss Harald Müller, who died in 2015. The initiator of the campaign is Christina’s son Paul, who very quickly won the support of the management and the works council with his idea.
A large part of the staff donates 0.26 euros per month to support sponsored children of another organisation. Of this sum, a part was used for the Moria donation.”
Moria almost completely destroyed
At the beginning of September, there was a devastating fire that almost completely destroyed the Greek camp and the refugees’ belongings. Europe’s largest refugee camp was then evacuated from mid-September. In the meantime, a replacement camp was set up on Lesbos: Mavrovouni camp, where over 7,000 people currently live. Of these, around 2,500 are children.
Most of the refugees living there come from Afghanistan, followed by Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Iran and Iraq. The people live there in an area surrounded by water and wind on three sides. The conditions in the camp are very poor, the risk of spreading diseases like COVID-19 is worrying. Moreover, winter is just around the corner. Nevertheless: the people there depend on the camp because they have no roof over their heads and no access to sanitation or running water.
“We are very happy that we can make a financial contribution to refugee aid with our cheque presentation,” emphasise the sisters Christina Vornberger and Stefanie Müller-Rosso as well as Christian Gnaß, Managing Partner of the emco Group. The organisation wortundtat is very pleased: “A great Christmas present! We rely on donations and the solidarity of the population. Voluntary contributions honour our work. We appreciate your support very much and would like to praise your social commitment in times like these,” said Adolf. He hoped that other institutions would follow suit and consider donations for charitable purposes, especially for human survival.
